I've just managed to get my hands on System Shock 2 and was poking around for mods to improve gameplay and so forth and I stumbled across the SHTUP (http://shtup.home.att.net/) project. It's probably old news but from the look of the comparisons between the old and the new textures (an example (http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/489/shtupcompareblasteddoorgy1.jpg)) I'd say it is an absolutely essential mod :).

Any other recommendations for mods that will improve my enjoyment of what is supposed to be one of the best FPS-RPGs ever made would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I believe there's either a patch or mod that allows you to disable the weapon degradation. Trust me, you need it. Firing a clip of pistol rounds and having the gun shatter is not only frustrating but incredibly stupid too.

I'd consider the ReBirth (http://www.fileplanet.com/125428/120000/fileinfo/System-Shock-Rebirth-Beta-1) mod equally essential. It replaces most of the character models in the game with more detailed versions and more high res textures. Does a lot to improve the atmosphere in the game even further, in my opinion.

It's a bit tricky to install properly though so make sure you follow the instructions carefully. Otherwise you might end up with all the characters in the game being invisible, I noticed. :)

Yeah, and it's hard enough as is when you can actually SEE The Many.

Ooh, thank you both. I haven't gotten around to playing it yet but these should do nicely :).

I know I'm engaging in some serious thread necromancy here but I thought might be OK in this instance.

Apparently, System Shock 2 has finally been released to the secondary DRM free market legally. It's available now at GOG.com (http://www.gog.com/gamecard/system_shock_2) and from what I've heard at Steam soon too.
