Now that I've got your attention (:D), here's a brain-twister for you guys to figure out. WARNING: Don't try it if you never took 7th grade math.

The following is based on a famous problem about Diophantus, a Greek mathematician from the third century.

Find how long he lived based on the following facts:

One sixth of his life was spent in boyhood.
One twelfth of his life was spend as a youth.
After 1/7 more of his life passed, he got married.
Five years after getting married, he had a son.
His son lived 1/2 as long as Diophantus lived. (Don't ask me why :eyeraise: )
The son died 4 years before Diophantus died.

well then, really no need for anyone else to post.

Actually, I made the title vague on purpose so it could be a general post-your-brain-benders-thread. If any of you have got any...

According to your answer...
One sixth of his life was spent in boyhood = 14 years of boyhood
One twelfth of his life was spend as a youth = 7 years of "youth"
After 1/7 more of his life passed, he got married = married at 39
Five years after getting married, he had a son = son at 44
His son lived 1/2 as long as Diophantus lived = son died at 42, which would be when his father was 86...so how could he have died at 84?

Are you sure? It did say the puzzle was based on that one...might be different from yours.

Still he died at 84. :)

I even checked google (and wikipedia) to make sure I was correct, and I am. :)

I checked it and as master in engineering I can honestly tell you his answer is absolutely correct.

x/7 + x/12 + x/7 + 5 + x/2 +4 = x
will be the equation (where x equals the total lifetime) and after some work you get
756 = 9x
or
84 = x

I just spent 10 minutes solving this, and then I read the thread and see you all have already figured it out. :cry:

x= age
x/6 = boyhood
x/12 = youth
x/4 = boy = youth
x/4 + x/7 = marry age = 11x/28
11x/28 + 5 = son
son age = x/2
11x/28 + 5 + x/2 + 4=x
25x/28 + 9 = x
25x/28 - x = -9
-3x/28 = -9
-252 = -3x
84 = x
