Do you really think Empire at War will be released this year?

It would probably not be released this year I think. (Remember Republic Commando!)
I guess, that they will change it during this year into next year.

Well, then I will atleast have one game on my list for next year. :D

I am sure I will be able to keep myself pre-occupied enough to not having to think too much on when it will be released. :)

That's LucasArts we're talking of. They usually prefer to release a bad product than to delay, unlike Blizzard for example, which would rather delay their product for 3 years than to release anything but perfection.

Republic commandos was an exception.

Without going off topic or anything (God forbid I should be the last one doing it :p ) but is RC out already or?

Just sounded like it the way you are talking about it.

Just sounded like it the way you are talking about it. Nope, it is released March 5th this year! In the past they said that it will be released in Octobre 2004.

Empire At War is in for a Fall (Q4 - Quarter 4) release. Galactic battlegrounds was released in November - on time when it was announced in the February of that year.

EaW is looking good at this early stage and I believe they have been working on this engine and Lucasarts for some time - almost 2 years on this.

I interviewed SWGB Game Director - Garry Gaber who used to post on our forums and he mentioned that he was working on a 'related project' to SWGB and it wasn't an expansion. Now we have EaW. Sadly, Garry has left Lucasarts - looking after his baby and family (wish them all well) but with the history in mind, a Q4 release does look extremely likely

Okay we will see it.
When you say that they are working on this two years, it could be so.

engine's already built, and it looks like they have a good jump on it. Engine and graphics are what take up the most time in building a game (also the most space on your HD!)

October 24, 2003 - Petroglyph signs devlopment deal!

All of us here at Petroglyph are excited to announce that we have signed a deal for a AAA title with a leading software entertainment publisher!

For strategic and contractual reasons, we are not allowed to give any details about the nature or publisher we're working with, but we can say that we couldn't have asked for a better license, project, or publisher.

Prospective employees wishing to learn more about signing up with Petroglyph are encouraged to contact us.

Can't say much about it as I don't really have a basic view of their progress. I do believe however it will be released fall this year, they'll need to compete with AoE III

You cannot compare AOE III and Empire at War because they are different types of stories.

Republic Commando was held back on purpose they set the release date way to close to Battlefront and noone wanted to buy it because it had not had enough publicity. I bet the game was finished last year on time just not put on selves to get the most profit by holding back till 2005.

Same thing will happen with E@W i think since AOE3 is coming this fall also they will wait until the heat of that game has cooled then I'd exspect a early 2006 release.

Unless AOE3 is delayed to spring 2k6...

They might aim for a Christmas release.

I was just at my local EB yesturday and they said they had no definate release date for RC. As for EaW, I think they will have it out on time just because of how it looks now. I think the only major thing they have to change it is the ground combat graphics.

Republic Commando will be released around Episode 3 to tie in with it. Even more so because its the closest to an Episode 3 based game being released on PC. The official Ep3 game is on ps2 and xbox only.

I suspect AOE3 is more likely to be delayed and I have no problem with that as I have no interest in it at all.

I also think that EaW will be released around October 20th.

Why?

Thats when the Ep1 and 2 DVDs were released, so it makes sense to release this game at the same time, just like Battlefront was released with the OT DVDs.

Except that EaW will have nothing to do with the PT(well outside the fact that it is based after Ep.3).

Republic Commando is coming out March 1st. Look at the official site. March is still a bit far from Ep.3

I see them marketing the game as the continuation of Ep3. "You saw the creation of the Empire, now witness its rise to power!" or something along those lines.

When you can't be sure with Republic Commando, you can't be sure that Empire at War is out this year. I bet that it is out first quarter next year.
I guess, that it is more difficult to develope a RTS than a game like RC. And it takes more time.

Petroglyph NOT LucasArts is making the game. LA is just the publisher. Whay can't you guys see that, or are you just SO devoted to LucasArts that you can't see straight.

DK will say the same thing.

Half of the people which develope a STAR WARS game are from Lucasarts.
When I looked into the credits of one of my older games, not developed by Lucasarts, there are much names under Lucasarts.

A quick insight to my world.

Alot of you may/may not know that I work for a games publisher. Developers MUST reach certain milestones in the product cycle> Failure to meet the milestone means that payment for the work completed is held back (in most cases).

This might be the case here, it might not be but thats how must publishers work with developers.

The perhaps you can tell me something. If a game is not finished and the publisher knows its not done, will it still get released?

It all depends on the nature of the 'bug'

If a bug becomes a Show Stopper - bascially messes with completing the game, or crashes yr PC etc, then no. However, sometimes there are bugs that only occur 4-10% of the time and are extremely hard to repeat. This wont normally delay the release but will be fixed in a patch after more research has been done.

I can get you a very long list of games released with tons of bugs, most of the time, rushed out for either Christmas(or any other commercial holiday), to concord with the release of a movie or to come out before its competitors.

Obviously no. You could check on the official website you know.

Anyway, they signed the development deal back in October 2003 so the game has been in the works for well over a year.
