I'm looking for good tutorials for creating skins. I have been trying my hand at it but I can't get it to work. Are there any good skinning tutorials for newbies?

What kind of problems are you having exactly? Is it the editing of the textures themsselves, or getting the game to use them properly?

Well it's more the latter. I'm just experimenting right now. What I want is to modify how the Luke Skywalker model looks. I want it to look like this:
http://www.jedispy.com/images/sote/luke_03.jpg)

So what I'm doing is borrowing part of the leather jacket from Infinity Blade's DF Kyle Katarn (again this is just experimentation) so that it looks like a vest for Luke.

Now what I'm doing is taking the Luke model from JA, changing the skin, and trying to build a new .pk3 file. Problem is that I can't get the game to recognize it. My experience in skinning is almost non-existant, so I am not sure exactly what the basics are for JA skinning.

Heh. Trust me, if someone else had it already, I would be more than happy to use theirs. Feel more than free to make your own. Any models/skins I make are going to be free for anyone to use. I am not delusional about people using my mods. I don't own the intellectual rights to the following:
Star Wars
Shadows of the Empire
Luke Skywalker
Leia
Han Solo
Chewbacca
Dash Rendar
you get the idea...

So are there any good skinning tutorials out there? Like I said I can't get mine to work. I have never skinned anything for Raven/Quake3 stuff before, so I know I'm doing something wrong.

Anyone wanna lend a few pointers? My skin/model is located here (http://www.jedispy.com/downloads/sote/luke_sote.pk3).
Like I said, I'm just experimenting, so please, helpful comments only.

hrm....I wonder what I'm doing wrong. I'm just trying to make a simple multiplayer model. However it's not recognizing the .pk3 file at all. I first thought there must be an extra step in JA, but I can't get it to work in JO either.

I am at work now, but I will be home in an hour on lunch. I am going to upload the file. If anyone has any pointers, please help.

edit

O.k. I'm at home now and I'm uploading the luke_sote.pk3 file. Download it here (http://www.jedispy.com/downloads/sote/luke_sote.pk3). I am open to suggestions.

you did "luke_head_new.jpg" but in the .pk3 file i didnt even see the jpg, oh and btw it might be cuz you did luke_default.skin wich should be model_default.skin and voila after fixing all this , it should work properly! :)

I didn't take it as a flame. Thank you for the assistance.

I will have to play with this a little further. On my lunch (which is just about over) I tried taking a few of the tips in mind. I still can't get it to work, but I will play with it further.

Again thanks.

WOO HOO!!! It's working.

The skin looks a little funky. I'm trying to tweak it. Don't worry, icon_default.jpg will not stay that way. I was just having a little fun.

pakscape takes to long, but i use it to make .pk3s and .zip files.

I use the ..pk3s as compressed folders (http://server4.download.filefront.com/skhsjqzrwo+/pub2/Star_Trek_Voyager_Elite_Force/Tools_and_Utilities/Utilities/Pak_Tools/pk3-winxp.zip) thing, its a lot quicker.

MarcusLeCoy, do you have a better URL for that download? I click it myself and I get their invalid key crap.

For the most part I'm done with the Luke Skywalker skin. There are a few touch up points, but I'll worry about that later.

I'm going to finish the Mara Jade model next. Pretty much Peretti's Mara is near perfect (for my purposes) as it is now, but it needs just a couple touch ups.

Next comes Guri from the old Nomi Sunrider model.

At least now I know how to change around skins but how do I make new skins? If you know how to stuff for KOTOR then make a video of that to because I cant follow along to well with some of these peoples directions.

One more thing, how do you know which, umm... items to change(I know I dont make sense). What I mean is when you went down that list to add the word bael_ how do you know which ones to change then Im set to go exept the part where I still need to know how to make new skins like Grevious and Anakin and stuff like that.

Almost forgot, where do I put the modview and pakscape stuff at like which folders do I put them at?

for idiots (http://jediknight2.filefront.com/file/Skinning_for_Idiots;18746)

offcial one (http://jediknight2.filefront.com/info/CustomSkinningTutorial)

Where do I put the files at, any particular spot?

Now that I know how to do all that stuff, how do I actually make NEW skins?

And what about lightsabers?

You make a "new skin" by changing all entries in the .skin file from "Luke" (if it's the Luke model) to "your skin's name here" depending on what you decide to name your skin. Any time you see "Luke" listed in the pk3, change it to "your skin's name here" (except textures, unless you changed them in the .skin file as well). I'm sure the tutorials above will help you out more than I can.

If what you mean by "NEW skins" is actually "NEW textures", than I suggest you hunt down a copy of photoshop and a good tutorial. Or, you can download GIMP for free. I'm sure there are good GIMP tutorials here and there as well.

Which ever. Im not sure what it is but I mean like, how they created Grevious, that was a new skin. Did they use another model or make completley new textures or whatever.
