i've seen in several maps, like mp/ffa1 and mp/ffa3 that there were pipes that would curve at 90 degree angles. now i know the pipes are cylinders, but how do they curve it like that? i tried making small slices and have one end wider then the other and connect em, but that just came out choppy and not as fine as how they did it. is their some special technique to do this?

Press V while selecting a cylinder (a mesh cylinder not a brush cylinder - they're just useless most of the time).

Drag the points around and you can make tons of shapes, I'm pretty sure you can work out how to drag them to bend the pipe if you look at them and think about it...just really don't try it with a brush, it will not work.

Yeah, Wade, what do you mean by mesh? Ive tried moving the points around a lot, but... well.. it looks bad and deformed.

Ok here we go (simply because I'm tired)
First: make a box and turn it into a cylinder as show below.

Change your view to view the cylinder from the side and press V so you get this:

Drag the top line of points so instead of being horizontal they become vertical and drag them off to the right like this:

Now drag the middle points around until you make 3 right angles, you'll straight away see the fact it's now a curved cylinder.

Deselected and after pressing Ctrl+N (which is the shortcut to fit the texture naturally) you get this:
