My power supply has a noisy fan problem. Started about a week ago. I can't afford a new power supply at this time.

Is there a cheap way to remedy this problem?

I already cleaned it. :(

keep blowing on the tower to cool down the computer whenver it gets hot.

hmm...my old comp did that...and...before I broke it...I bought earphones.

I suggest disemboweling another fan and setting it in front of the noisy one. :thumbsup:

I can see all the great advice in this thread from our mass of technical gurus! :p

turn it off and open the windows instead if it's hot, or if you can afford it, get a new fan or air conditioner instead.

maybe the bearing has come loose in the fan.
the only thing you can do is take the whole thing apart and just replace the fan.
although you would be better off getting a new PSU.

yup, sounds like the bearing, but i'm not sure it is worth the hassle of replacing the bearing or the fan for the price of a power supply. You could try though.

They sell those cheap mini fans at Walmart...maybe you could rig it with duck tape....

as for your fan noise, whenever there is too much noise, there are parts vibrating or loose(or even broken), sometimes it can be a factor of power supply being delivered incorrectly.... some fans are just crap and make alot of noise(this is as they are made badly)

I kick my computer when it acts up. Sometimes it makes the internet and such go out, but when it works, it works. :)

I had the same problem and eventually the fan died. I think I got a fan from Radioshack for about $17. If you know how to take the power supply apart, it's really not that hard to do....

Use mechanical Oil it works for. I use it at work all the time.

As you can see in the diagram, you must counterbalance the fan with an elf, or handy object.

The problem with taking a power supply apart is that if you don't know what you're doing, it's potentially lethal... Has someone pointed that out yet?

Groovy, if you can't afford a new PSU, you always have the option of dumpster diving! :) Check out some of the dumpsters around Best Buy and other stores like that. Sometimes you can find some decent hardware.

Although, even if it's making a noise, that may not even be anything other than an annoyance. Just have a backup plan in case it decides to die. ;)

i got 2 fans in my computer, and after a cold night (after a night in which i didn't leave the pc on) it would make a RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR noice, unless i'd hit it a few times where the wires are coming to that cirkle (oh yes, call me the tech guru) and then it would stop...been doing this for a month or two

If it makes too much noise, why not apply oil to the part that is making noise?

Thats what my dad always do.
